Cruiser Marshal Ustinov is part of Russia's Northern Fleet and has Severomorsk as its home base.

Russian cruiser fires artillery few kilometres from border to Norway

The 186 meter long warship Marshal Ustinov is shooting artillery on targets at the Rybachii Peninsula as part of an ongoing exercise.

As people in Norway and the Nordic region take a breather in connection with the Holy Week, there is major naval activity in nearby Russian waters.

Russia's Northern Fleet is this week conducting several exercises in the Barents Sea. A part of the training is artillery shooting on targets at Rybachii, the Navy informs.

Cruiser Marshal Ustinov fired with its AK-130 artillery system and all targets were successfully hit, the official press notice claims.

The Rybachii Peninsula is located on the Barents Sea coast about 30 km from the border to Norway. The distance to the maritime borderline between the countries is about 20 km.

The Marshal Ustinov will this week also engage in anti-submarine training, as well as anti-aircraft and anti-drone drills. It will also fire several types of missiles, the Northern Fleet reports.

It is the second time in a month that the cruiser exercises in the Barents Sea. In early March, the warship reportedly engaged in drills that included artillery, missiles and torpedos.

Involved in the training were also a nuclear submarine, as well as frigate Admiral Kasatonov and anti-submarine vessel Yunga, Brest and Snezhnegorsk, Northern Fleet newspaper Na Strazhe Zapolyariya reports.

It is not unusual that the Northern Fleet engages in training on the Rybachii Peninsula. In September 2024, two Bastion complexes fired missiles from the peninsula as part of the Ocean-2024, last year's major naval exercise.
